#OnThisDay Meet the scientist Charles Barkla, he was a British physicist, and the winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1917 for his work in X-ray spectroscopy and related areas in the study of X-rays. Barkla began his work on electromagnetic waves under the mentorship of Nobel Laureate J. J. Thomson, who discovered the electron, and subsequently turned much of his attention to the study of Röntgen radiation — now known as X-rays. His most significant contribution to science was his discovery that each chemical element had characteristic Röntgen radiation. In other words, elements emit secondary X-rays when they are irradiated, and these correspond to unique wavelengths that are independent of temperature, chemical composition and structure. These characteristic X-rays can be used to identify elements present in compounds and are used in a variety of techniques involving spectroscopy. This work earned Barkla the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1917 and became an important tool used in science and research.
