Move over, dungeons and dragons. This International Tabletop Day, it's time for cities and carbon, board game-style. Created by four secondary school geography teachers in collaboration with Dr Tricia Seow, Co-Chair of the Sustainability Learning Lab (SLL) at NTU National Institute of Education, Singapore, the "Can You SustainaCity?" board game brings urban development and sustainability to life in the classroom. Players take on the roles of government, developer or dweller, and must collaborate, discuss and negotiate their way towards building a sustainable city. After multiple rounds of playtesting and development, the board game is now used in several secondary schools across Singapore by both students and teachers. Dr Seow said: "The board game helps learners engage with complex urban geography and sustainable development issues in a tangible and accessible way, making concepts such as land-use planning, resource allocation and stakeholder interests easier to understand. We sought to represent the complexity of real-world sustainability issues without overwhelming players, while ensuring that learning was embedded naturally within engaging game mechanics." By combining educational rigour with enjoyable gameplay, the teachers and Dr Seow hope to bring a fun and innovative approach to the secondary school geography curriculum. #NTUsgEducation #NTUsgPartnerships #NTUsgSustainability
