Deep dive into ocean conservation: While Singapore’s coastlines may appear clean, marine debris can persist beneath the surface for years, as students from #NTUsg’s Scuba Club discovered during a clean-up and coral identification dive around Sisters’ Islands. In partnership with Our Singapore Reefs, they joined clean-up dives and removed almost 20kg of marine litter over two days, including long-forgotten plastic bottles covered by algae, and a paint can with paint still inside that stained their trash pile brown. Before entering the water, the 16 students took part in a coral identification workshop led by Our Singapore Reefs co-founder Sam Shu Qin 岑淑芹, learning how to recognise different coral species and better appreciate Singapore’s marine biodiversity. In the spirit of #WorldOceanDay, the initiative gave students a closer look at Singapore’s marine ecosystems and the hidden impact of underwater litter, reinforcing the importance of keeping both shorelines and seas clean.
