The proof is in the poo-ding: #NTUsg scientists have identifed a potential stool biomarker linked to gut health and fatty liver disease. Published in Nature Communications, the study found that levels of the protein Angptl4 in stool increased with gut microbial imbalance and metabolic dysfunction associated with fatty liver disease. Assoc Prof Andrew Tan from NTU's Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine said the biomarker can already be detected using PCR machines commonly found in clinical laboratories, making it easier to incorporate into existing diagnostic workflows. Spearheaded by NTU PhD student Damien Chua, the team is now working with organisations in China and Thailand to further validate the findings, including measurements before and after treatment. Prof Tan is also collaborating with NTU engineering faculty to develop a microfluidic device for the test. These findings support earlier assessment of gut barrier dysfunction and can pave the way for more targeted approaches to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
