Together with Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology and Japan’s Meteorological Research Institute, we are expanding our ocean-based weather monitoring program after 2025 observations near Okinawa showed potential to improve typhoon intensity forecasts and sea surface temperature data. In 2026, we will add water vapor monitoring in the East China Sea to better track moisture flowing into Kyushu, helping researchers understand how linear rainbands form and improving forecasts of heavy rainfall and severe weather.
