Dirt on the road isn’t just messy – in some cases, it’s illegal. We recently fined waste management company BENEDICT RECYCLING PTY LIMITED $30,000 after trucks leaving its southwest Sydney facility tracked dirt and sediment offsite, creating dust and water pollution issues. The incident breached the conditions of the facility’s Environment Protection Licence and could have been prevented if pollution controls, such as wheel washing equipment, were adequately maintained and operating properly. It might not seem like a big deal, but it can be. When harmful dirt and sediment from waste facilities enter stormwater drains, the material can be washed into local waterways and cause harm to vulnerable aquatic ecosystems.
