Large supermarkets across NSW are now required to separate food waste from general waste. The first phase of these reforms applies to premises generating around 4,000 litres of general waste per week (think two skip bins), marking a significant step toward scaling FOGO recycling statewide. Designed to tackle the 1.7 million tonnes of food wasted in NSW each year, the changes will reduce landfill, cut emissions and strengthen food donation pathways. Large supermarkets will also begin tracking food donation volumes, helping direct more edible surplus to charities and people in need. This is a key milestone in NSW’s transition to a circular economy, treating organic waste as a valuable resource.
