The world's understanding of diabetes may be incomplete. Much of what we know about type 2 diabetes is based on studies in high-income countries, where obesity is a major risk factor. But research from Africa is revealing a more complex picture. At our recent Global Science Summit, Prof. Moffat Nyirenda, Director of the MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit, explained how studying diabetes in African populations could lead to new approaches to diagnosis, prevention and treatment, while challenging long-held assumptions about the disease.
