Rosalind Franklin was born on July 25, 1920, in London. A brilliant #chemist, she earned a #PhD. in physical chemistry with her thesis, "The physical chemistry of solid organic colloidal with a special reference to coal." She worked for some time in Paris learning X-ray diffraction and then returned to England to work at King's College. Here is where she made one of her most important contributions. Using X-ray diffraction, she discovered the dry and wet forms of #DNA, and also obtained a remarkable picture of the wet form. This picture came to be known as "Photograph 51." However, before she could publish her findings, a colleague with whom she had previously clashed, Maurice Wilkins, shared her photograph with James Watson. Watson and his partner, Francis Crick, took credit for her work and used it to develop their own model of DNA. They won a #Nobel prize for their publication. Franklin continued to make significant publications and #discoveries, particularly about #viruses, until her untimely death at age 37 due to ovarian cancer. #research #stem #scientists
