Today we received the wonderful news that Amina Helmi, professor at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute in Groningen, has received the highly prestigious Kavli prize in astrophysics. The prize has been awarded for her groundbreaking work in galactic archaeology and her discovery of so-called stellar streams, remnants of smaller galaxies that have been captured by our Milky Way billions of years ago but still form distinct populations of stars. Amina shares the prize with two other researchers, Vasily Belokurov (Cambridge University) and Rodrigo Ibata (Université de Strasbourg ). Fun fact: Amina is the second former NOVA scientific director to receive this honour. #kavliprize Kavli Astrophysics https://lnkd.in/eSiquCMS
