Data can get a student on someone's radar. It cannot make them feel like they belong. And belonging is one of the strongest predictors of whether a student actually finishes. Strong connections with peers, faculty, and the institution can offset real academic and financial pressure. Students who feel part of something push through difficulty at higher rates. This is especially critical in online and hybrid programs, where campus community doesn't exist by default. Belonging has to be designed in through intentional structures, consistent responsiveness, and tools that let students reach for support on their own terms. The signal students read most clearly? Whether someone follows up. Fast follow-up tells a student the institution is actually paying attention.
