Hydrogen-electric propulsion is considered a promising pathway towards climate-neutral regional aviation. But what does it take to make the technology viable for real-world operations? That is one of the key questions being addressed in the European Clean Aviation project HEROPS (Hydrogen-Electric Zero Emission Propulsion System). HEROPS addresses the key technologies required for hydrogen-electric regional aviation, including liquid hydrogen systems, fuel cells, power electronics, thermal management and the integration of these technologies into a scalable propulsion system. Within this R&D effort, NLR together with the project partners, contribute to the research and technology development that will help advance hydrogen-electric propulsion for climate-neutral regional aviation.
