Why do innovation ecosystems underperform — despite all the talent, capital and ideas? At Create the Future 2026, Thijs Sprangers, Anikka Fulop and Arno Nijhof explored a hard truth: ecosystems don’t fail because of a lack of innovation. They fail because of a lack of coordination. Too often, organisations operate in isolation, each optimising their own piece, instead of aligning around a shared mission to accelerate real outcomes. Through The Ecosystem Game, participants experienced this firsthand. As roles like investors, corporates and universities collided, one insight stood out: “We stopped trying to fix individual problems — and started building an ecosystem that removes blockers together.” Because that’s the real shift. From solving friction… to orchestrating systems. As innovation becomes increasingly cross-sector, the ability to orchestrate ecosystems — not just participate in them — is becoming a defining capability for organisations.
