​Thrilled to share the successful completion of Project Review 1 for our engineering mini-project: AI-Based Detection of Current Transformer (CT) Saturation! ⚡​Current Transformer (CT) saturation remains a critical bottleneck in power system protection. During high-magnitude faults or severe DC offsets, the magnetic core of a CT enters saturation, resulting in severely distorted secondary current waveforms. This waveform clipping "blinds" protective relays, causing catastrophic tripping delays or unintended maloperations. ​Traditional analytical and signal-processing methods often fall short under complex noise or evolving grid dynamics. Our project addresses this by leveraging Artificial Intelligence to achieve instantaneous, highly reliable saturation detection. ​For our Phase 1 Milestone, my team focused on the foundational engineering and architectural framework: ​System Modeling & Problem Formulation: Quantified the exact magnetic flux parameters and fault conditions that trigger core saturation. ​Comprehensive Literature Survey: Critically evaluated existing algorithmic gaps in traditional protection schemes (like point-by-point methods and curve fitting). ​AI Architecture Setup: Finalized our Machine Learning/Deep Learning framework tailored for real-time feature extraction and rapid classification of transient waveform signatures. ​Next Steps: Generating extensive fault datasets via simulation (PSCAD/MATLAB/Simulink) and initiating model training and hyperparameter tuning. ​A huge shoutout to my dedicated team members, Mannuru Ameer and Karansinh, for their hard work.
