As cities expand, street lamps are lighting up more and more areas that used to belong to nature. This is damaging to biodiversity as many species are sensitive to the bright white light; for example it may give bees a kind of ‘jet lag’. 🐝 🐝 🐝 So how do we strike a balance between our need for safety and nature’s need for darkness? 🤔 One solution is setting up red street lights, as NIRAS’ experts Mikkel Stener Møller and lisa dam trapp explain in this recent episode of PBS News programme Newshour. The red street lights create a zone between urbanised areas and nature that makes it possible for local wild life to thrive while still providing a reasonable amount of light – and safety – to the people living in the area. 👉 View the full episode to learn more about how and why municipalities such as Gladsaxe Kommune and Odense Kommune have implemented biodiversity lights. https://lnkd.in/e7nE4VZs
