🤒 Most viruses never make anyone sick. In fact, most live in the ocean. 💦 On Monday 15 June, NIOZ PhD candidate Gonçalo Piedade defends his thesis on the diversity and dynamics of marine viruses in polar seas at Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics - University of Amsterdam. 🦠 His research uncovered nearly 8,000 viral types in coastal Antarctica, three quarters of which were previously unknown to science. It also sheds new light on how viruses influence microbial life and carbon cycling in some of the world's fastest-changing marine ecosystems. Conducted within the NIOZ Marine Microbiology and Biogeochemistry department, the research was supervised by Corina Brussaard, with Henk Bolhuis (NIOZ) and Bas E. Dutilh as co-supervisors. 👉 Read more about his research on the NIOZ website: https://lnkd.in/eARm9dsB 🍀 We wish Gonçalo the very best for his defence!
