Last week, NIORD welcomed industry experts and guests to Bergen Wind Academy 2026 - two days of engaging discussions, practical insights and real-world perspectives on the offshore wind sector from an insurance perspective, plus some social activities, too! The academy delivered a packed programme built around the fictional ClubFloat / ClubFixed wind farm projects, guiding participants through insurance-related matters during offshore wind developments. From global market updates and regional outlooks in Japan and the US, to the scaling ambitions of floating wind, the opening sessions set the stage for what is a rapidly evolving industry. There was a strong focus on operations, with deep dives into service and maintenance practices, the use of drone technology, as well as certification challenges across fixed and floating assets - all highlighting the critical role of risk control in day-to-day operations. Contractual frameworks, covering both turbine supply and cable installation agreements, and how these intersect with construction and operational insurance, were also covered. This practical perspective carried through into sessions on offshore wind insurance, including lender expectations, broker insights and a hands-on group exercise structuring insurance solutions based on Nordic conditions. Looking further into the lifecycle of wind farms, discussions addressed ageing assets, lifetime extension and decommissioning before turning to emerging risk areas such as geopolitics, war risk, cyber security and high-value cargo transits. The second day focused on claims trends and loss prevention, with particular attention to blade damage, repair strategies and operational challenges, as well as opportunities for more collaborative solutions between operators and insurers.
