ISO 10297 or ISO 17879 — which standard applies to your cylinder valve? In gas cylinder valve selection, the key question is not only “which gas?” or “which pressure?” It is also: how is the valve designed to operate? ISO 10297 and ISO 17879 are often mentioned together, but they are not interchangeable. ISO 10297 mainly applies to manual cylinder valves, VIPR valves, and bundle valves. These valves are operated by a handwheel or lever, so type testing focuses on mechanical strength, endurance, torque resistance, hydraulic pressure, and other safety requirements. ISO 17879, on the other hand, is dedicated to self-closing cylinder valves. These valves normally remain closed and open only when connected with a suitable adapter or filling device. Because of this design, the testing focus is different — including actuation endurance, leak tightness, and impact/drop resistance. For gas cylinder valves, the right standard always starts with the valve’s operating principle. #GasCylinders #CylinderValves #ISO10297 #ISO17879 #GasSafety #GasEquipment #PressureVessels #IndustrialGas #CO2 #Compliance
