How long can a refillable gas cylinder stay in service? The answer is not simply “5 years” or “10 years.” For many seamless aluminum gas cylinders, service life depends on whether the cylinder can pass periodic inspection and retesting by an authorized test station. Retesting is not only a compliance requirement. It is also a long-term check of the original manufacturing quality. During retesting, key points usually include: • Visual inspection • Thread inspection • Hydrostatic testing • Internal cleaning and drying • Retest stamping For DOT-3AL cylinders, the retest interval is generally 5 years. For many TPED / ADR aluminum cylinders used with non-corrosive and non-toxic gases, the interval is often 10 years. That is why cylinder quality should not be judged only at the time of purchase. Clear marking, stable heat treatment, proper valve matching, and batch traceability all help support safer long-term use. From a manufacturer’s perspective, these details should be considered before the cylinder enters service, not only when the next retest date arrives.
