Two weeks ago, I underwent a DMEK surgery, a form of corneal transplantation. The surgery itself is very fascinating. We are lucky to live in a time when procedures like this are possible. What strikes me most is that none of it would have been possible without the generosity of someone I will never meet. An anonymous donor made the decision to donate tissue after their passing. Because of that decision, I now can regain vision that had gradually deteriorated over the years because of Fuchs' dystrophy. The challenging (ongoing) recovery made me realize how much of daily life depends on good vision. Color perception, contrast, recognizing faces from a distance, reading a screen, driving a car, or simply navigating the world without thinking about it. This experience has made me appreciate the impact a donor can have on the life of a complete stranger. If you're facing DMEK surgery yourself and would like to exchange experiences, feel free to reach out. #OrganDonation #DMEK #CornealTransplant
