The latest addition to the NIKI Studies in Netherlandish–Italian Art History series will soon be published: Visual Humanism. Collaborations between Artists and Humanists (1450–1650) (Leiden: Brill) Edited by Marieke Van Den Doel and Maria Fiammetta Iovine, with a contribution by Gert Jan Van Der Sman, this volume presents the proceedings of an earlier NIKI conference. The essays examine collaborations between Renaissance artists and humanists, exploring how these partnerships contributed to the revival of antiquity and the renewed prominence of the pagan gods in visual culture. The volume also considers the role of artists as "visual humanists" and revisits the longstanding debate on whether this revival was primarily an artistic or a religious phenomenon.
