During my recent fieldwork in the Jaisalmer region, I came across an abandoned stone structure in Chatrail village. According to the local community, this monument is known as "Sumal ki Maidi." Many people are familiar with the celebrated folklore of Mumal and Mahendra, one of Rajasthan's most enduring legends of love. While Mumal ki Maidi at Lodruva, about 6 km from Jaisalmer, continues to attract visitors, the memory of Sumal, Mumal's sister, appears to survive largely through oral tradition and this neglected architectural remnant. The structure, though modest in scale, exhibits remarkable craftsmanship. Delicately carved stone doorframes, ornamental motifs, sculptural niches, and intricate decorative elements suggest that it once held considerable cultural and architectural significance. Despite centuries of survival in the harsh Thar landscape, the monument today stands in a vulnerable condition. Unfortunately, the site bears visible signs of deterioration. Several sculptures have been severely weathered, portions of the structure have collapsed, and modern graffiti has further damaged its historic fabric. Without timely conservation, an important fragment of Rajasthan's tangible and intangible heritage may be lost. As an anthropologist, moments like these reinforce an important lesson: heritage is not preserved only in grand forts and famous monuments. It also survives in local narratives, community memory, and lesser known structures that rarely appear in guidebooks but remain deeply embedded in the cultural landscape. Whether this monument can be historically established as Sumal ki Maidi requires further archaeological, architectural, and historical investigation. However, the persistence of this local tradition itself is a valuable subject of ethnographic inquiry, reminding us that folklore and material culture often coexist in meaningful ways. Every abandoned monument has a story. Sometimes, all it needs is someone willing to listen. #Fieldwork #Anthropology #CulturalHeritage #Jaisalmer #Rajasthan #Ethnography #Architecture #Folklore #MumalMahendra #OralTradition #HeritageConservation #Archaeology #BuiltHeritage #Research
