Some wine estates have a way of leaving a lasting impression—not because of a single great bottle, but because every wine tells the same story in a slightly different way. That was certainly my takeaway from attending an outstanding Cos d'Estournel masterclass during the annual portfolio tasting of POOT Agenturen. Together with our own Martin Bronkhorst, I had the opportunity to taste wines spanning nearly five decades, from the beautifully mature 1975 to the powerful yet refined 2019 and elegant 2021 vintages. What struck me most wasn’t simply the quality—although that was undeniable—but the remarkable consistency across the range. Vintage after vintage, the wines combined freshness, structure and those distinctive notes of exotic spices that have become synonymous with Cos d’Estournel. It was a fascinating demonstration of how a truly great terroir continues to express itself, regardless of the growing season. As Chief Editor of Dutch Wine Apprentice, experiences like these remind me why we invest so much time in telling the stories behind the wines. Great bottles deserve context, and the people, history and philosophy behind an estate often make the wines even more compelling. Martin has captured that story beautifully in his latest article, exploring the history of Château Cos d’Estournel, its unique Saint-Estèphe terroir, winemaking philosophy and our tasting notes from the masterclass. You can read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eUJFWPjW A big thank you to our partner POOT Agenturen (Judith and Frank W. Poot) for the tasting opportunity, and to Charles Thomas and Baptiste BELLY of Cos d'Estournel for their openness and shared learnings. Do you think the greatest wine estates reveal their true quality most clearly in challenging vintages? I’d be interested to hear your thoughts. #bordeaux #finewine #cosdestournel #wine #dutchwineapprentice
