Job posting: Head of Marketing Requirements: Own pipeline but don't control budget Drive brand but run every idea past 4 stakeholders first Be strategic but also fix the sales deck by EOD Build a team but stay hands-on Hit targets in 90 days for a 9-month sales cycle Generate demand but don't spend money on ads Create content but make sure legal approves every word Lead the function but report to someone who's never run marketing Compensation: Blame when pipeline is light Credit goes to sales when deals close Quarterly "what is marketing even doing" conversations A seat at the table (but not the one where decisions get made) That's not a job description. That's a setup. You're not hiring a marketing leader. You're hiring someone to take accountability for outcomes they don't control. Then wondering why you're on your fourth Head of Marketing in two years. If you can't define what marketing owns versus what it influences before you post the role, you're not ready to hire. And if you're a marketer interviewing right now, ask this: What does marketing own here? And who decides that? If they can't answer clearly, you have your answer.
