More than 140 years ago, on October 21, 1879, Thomas Edison invented the world's first practical incandescent light bulb. Until then, for many, many years, people relied on the light produced by nature to live. With Edison’s invention, most of society could then have light when necessary. Lighting is often taken for granted, but it should be celebrated on this great day of invention as “Lighting Day”, and honor the positive effect it has brought the world.   The "Lighting Day" committee, established by three lighting-related organizations (Japan Lighting Manufacturers Association, The Japan Electric Association, and The Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan), designates October 21 as "Lighting Day".
