This Learning Disability Week, we’re celebrating the brilliant work at NHS Essex Integrated Care Board to tackle health inequalities for people with learning disabilities. In parts of Essex, fewer than one in five people with learning disabilities receive their annual health check. That’s why NHS Essex and charity Hamelin are piloting a new programme to boost uptake of these annual health checks – an essential tool for catching health concerns early and supporting people to live healthier, more independent lives. As well as increasing uptake, together they are co-creating personalised health action plans with each patient and connecting them to specialist services and local support where needed. Tom Abell, Chief Executive at NHS Essex, said: “Annual health checks can make a real difference for people with a learning disability, but only if they lead to the right support afterwards. By working closely with GP practices, charities and people with lived experience, we can make care more proactive, personal and easier to access.” It’s fantastic to see NHS organisations making progress in working alongside voluntary and community partners to reach people earlier, improve access to care, reduce inequalities and support people to live healthier lives. 💙
