There were just weeks between the arrival of HMT Windrush and the creation of the NHS. The connection between them runs deep. Thousands of Caribbean men and women have helped to shape the NHS ever since – including Vince, a mental health nurse who gave 40 years of service after arriving Southampton from Trelawny Parish, Jamaica in 1958. His daughter Marisa reflects on his experience: ‘Like many, he did not receive the warm welcome he was expecting and struggled to find accommodation and employment.’ Despite that, he stayed and served in the NHS. And his legacy lives on – Marisa is now a Non-Executive Director at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. She honours Windrush Day for the service and sacrifices made by the Windrush generation that answered Britain’s call.
