Congratulations to Somerset NHS Foundation Trust for winning the Digital Innovation Award at the NHS Excellence Awards 🎉 By working with NHS 111, they established an online self-referral pathway for patients with symptoms of breast cancer. Patients can self-refer using an online portal through the NHS App, if they have any concerns. They can then get a physical assessment and breast-imaging – all without needing to see a GP. The initiative launched in 2025 and has made a huge difference, reducing the time it takes to get checked and if needed, diagnosed. Over 1,400 people have used the pathway with 78 patients being diagnosed with cancer. This simple, practical idea removes delays and helps patients get the right specialist care sooner.
