A Return to Abstraction: "La balade 0011" (2025) A tribute to a very dear friend, Gilbert DRUART, with a huge THANK YOU for his magnificent text: "Reflections of a filmmaker, architect, and art lover on Emmanuelle's work." Much like the workings of providence, the paths of art are inscrutable: what mysterious forces drive individuals down this road when nothing in their background seemed to predispose them to it?  I am among the friends who have followed Emmanuelle's career from the very beginning; while revisiting her guestbook, I came across a sentence I had written in April 1996: "It is fascinating to trace her progress by rereading this guestbook, which serves as a private diary of the studio..." One might speak of "evolution" or "progress," for the initial approach was far from obvious: how does one exorcise the horror of the Cambodian tragedy? Battling the drabness of the city and the sky, Emmanuelle's canvases are bursts of light—illuminations that blossom upon the walls, lighting them up like stars or celestial bodies. It is Prometheus bringing the fire of the heavens to mankind.  Hailing from a land of sun and warmth, Emmanuelle has successfully integrated Eastern and Western cultures. From the East, she brought back a shimmering array of colors and a unique quality of light.  In the West, she discovered structural elements that anchor her work in the essential balance of architectural forms and forces—a balance of surfaces and color patches. We are confronted with an apparent simplicity, devoid of affectation; the miracle lies in how, through her Eastern subtlety and feminine sensibility, she achieves results that most others reach only after laborious research and calculation—if they manage to reach them at all.
