What's got these STEM majors taking ceramics class? 👀 “It’s stress relief,” says senior biology major Mary Ou (left in first photo), who we was spotted recently on a stool in a third-floor studio with a few of her pieces, including a white vase with a pink bow. “Everyone is welcoming, and you’re not worried about making something good.” Her friend and classmate Kim Nguyen (right), who studies neural science at CAS, didn’t need persuading. “I wanted to do something with my hands, it’s so freeing,” she added. Mary and Kim are among the 15 students—mostly seniors—who snagged spots in Ceramics for Nonmajors, an NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development studio art course that tends to fill up as soon as registration opens. Taught by Fan Qi, an artist and adjunct who is completing an MFA , it covers basic hand-building techniques and rudimentary glazing skills before moving on to the potter’s wheel.
