“The quote looked profitable.” Then someone said: “We’ll need a second setup for that.” That is where the margin starts moving. The part now has to be removed, repositioned, aligned and checked again. More handling. More inspection. More chance for error. This is why the cheapest machine rate is not always the cheapest process. A five-axis route may cost more per hour, but if it removes extra setups and protects alignment, the total job cost can still be lower. The real question is not: “What is the hourly rate?” It is: “What will this part cost from first setup to approved part?” Sometimes the second setup is where the profit disappears. #CNCQuoting #FiveAxisMachining #PrecisionMachining
