The Reality of Span of Control One of the most overlooked but critical determinants of organizational success is span of control. Many organizations pride themselves on their well-documented structural frameworks, yet a structure on paper is powerless without a functional and adequately staffed framework to drive it. I once worked in an organization that showcased its structure as a badge of excellence. However, beneath the surface, the system was set up for failure. Regional managers were tasked with overseeing 40–50 sites with over 1500 - 3000 guards without the right number of supervisors/Coordinators or qualified manpower. This was not leadership—it was a recipe for burnout and systemic collapse. When departments that are supposed to ensure seamless workflow fail in their roles, the ripple effect is devastating. The entire organizational machinery becomes a tangled web of inefficiencies, leading to poor performance, low morale, and ultimately, reputational decline. A realistic span of control is not just about numbers—it is about balance, effectiveness, and empowering managers with the right tools, manpower, and support. Only then can structures translate into sustainable success. “A structure is only as strong as the people empowered to bring it to life. Without functional span of control, even the best framework is just ink on paper.” Chibuike Nwosu FEMI LAWRENCE OJO MBA, PFSO, CSS Clement Michael Omokehinde Otuyemi-ACIPM, HRPL, SPHRi(in view) Omorville Umoru Olalekan O.
