What happens when one of Greece’s largest public hospitals becomes a climate resilience testbed? At Nikaia General Hospital “Agios Panteleimon,” the LIFE RESYSTAL project has explored how hospitals can prepare for climate shocks such as heatwaves and floods. This pilot is particularly relevant for Athens, a recognised climate hotspot where extreme heat and flooding pose increasing risks to healthcare infrastructure and operations. Tangible on-site interventions include energy and infrastructure upgrades, blue-green solutions, and the development of a Capacity Assessment Matrix. This tool provides the hospital with a “climate resilience profile” across infrastructure, governance, and crisis management. As coordinating partner, NCSR “Demokritos” has co-developed tools that make climate resilience actionable. These include methodologies for localising climate data, conducting impact and risk assessments, adaptation planning, and cost-benefit analysis. Together with documentation and guidelines for green procurement and investment, these form the LIFE RESYSTAL framework, enabling other hospitals to follow a similar pathway. Through the Upscaling Adaptation Starting Package, additional hospitals can efficiently adopt and build on LIFE RESYSTAL outcomes. Researcher Stelios Karozis (Environmental Research Laboratory, EREL, Institute of Nuclear & Radiological Sciences & Technology, Energy & Safety at NCSR Demokritos”) coordinated LIFE RESYSTAL, supporting pilots such as Nikaia in implementing blue-green adaptation measures and strengthening climate resilience. In parallel, synergies with other EU initiatives have helped Nikaia lay the foundations for data and governance structures relevant to future digital health systems and the European Health Data Space.
