At NAVAL GROUP’s 6th R&D Partners’ Day at the Institut français de Grèce (IFG), researchers, engineers and visionaries reflected on turning research into deployable defence capability. This is precisely the spirit that drives our defence and dual-use work at NCSR Demokritos. Within Naval Group's network of 33 Greek partners across 60 projects, NCSR Demokritos contributes through targeted expertise in AI, cybersecurity, and energy systems, evolving capabilities and concepts into operational value. Vangelis Karkaletsis, Director of NCSR Demokritos, was there, alongside NCSR Demokritos researchers actively running these European Defence Fund (EDF) programs, which span two NCSR Demokritos Institutes: the Institute of Nuclear & Radiological Sciences & Technology, Energy & Safety at NCSR Demokritos, and the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications at NCSR Demokritos. ☛ Athanasios Stubos leads CALIPSO - EDF 2023, advancing low-emission propulsion systems for land and naval defence across 30 partners in 15 countries. ☛ George Xilouris is strongly involved in AInception, developing AI for real-time cyber threat detection and response, and CITADEL Range, where he leads the Accreditation pillar alongside major European defence actors. ☛ Dimitris Kyriazanos and Theodoros Giannakopoulos are advancing FaRADAI, focusing on adaptive AI systems designed to operate under constrained data and high-risk conditions. In 2023, we formalised our partnership with Naval Group and Naval Group Hellas by signing a Memorandum of Understanding, a commitment to joint R&D across both civil and defence applications, rooted in Europe's geopolitical imperative to build sovereign defence capabilities. The programmes running today are the first proof of that commitment.
