What does a PhD actually teach you? According to Christoforos Rekatsinas, Researcher in ML-Driven Engineering and Scientific Computing at the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications at NCSR Demokritos, it teaches you how to navigate uncertainty, tackle complex problems, and turn open-ended questions into a structured path toward a solution. That, he argues, is the essence of the engineering mindset. Speaking at ThinkBiz Academy 2026, Christoforos explored how this mindset is increasingly reshaping research itself: moving beyond the production of knowledge toward the creation of real-world value and innovation. The real shift, however, lies in the questions researchers ask. In research, the challenge often is: “Can I prove this works?” In innovation, the question becomes: “Can I prove this solves a real problem and that someone actually needs it?” Recognising when that question changes is often the hardest part of the journey, and the point at which knowledge begins to move beyond the laboratory and into society. His own career reflects that transition. Building on doctoral research in composite materials and numerical simulation, he developed autonomous surface vessels, composite pressure vessels, and advanced structures powered by AI, 3D printing, and additive manufacturing, demonstrating how research can evolve into innovation with real-world value. Researchers like Christoforos represent a growing mindset at Demokritos: scientists who combine deep technical expertise with practical thinking, and who are increasingly defined by their ability to turn research into solutions with tangible impact. #EngineeringMindset #ThinkBiz2026 #ResearchAndInnovation  #InnovationMindset #FromResearchToImpact
