Today, the NATO Association of Canada is hosting a virtual discussion for International Women’s Day: “Building Resilience: Women’s Leadership Against Violent Extremism.” This panel brings together leading experts to examine why gender-sensitive analysis is essential to understanding and addressing violent extremism across local, national, and international contexts. Dr. Cécile Rousseau, is a professor at McGill University Division of Social and Cultural Psychiatry and a leading researcher on migration, trauma, and radicalization, will share insights from her work on the social and psychological dimensions of violent extremism and community resilience. Dr. Ardath Whynacht, is a Professor at Mount Allison University and a scholar of gender, radicalization, and social transformation, will explore how gender dynamics shape pathways into and out of extremist movements. Together, our speakers will discuss how women experience violent extremism differently, and the critical roles they play in prevention efforts as community leaders, policymakers, advocates, and contributors to long-term peace and security.
