On Tuesday, June 23, the NATO Association of Canada was pleased to welcome Penny Beames, Human-Environmental Analyst with the Global Water Security Centre, for an engaging discussion with our NAOC team. Drawing on more than 25 years of academic and professional experience across literature, science, theatre, environmental studies, and international research, Penny shared valuable insights into her career path and her work in global water security. She also spoke about the importance of “wandering periods,” encouraging young professionals to embrace exploration, self-discovery, and skill-building as part of their career journeys. Penny also discussed the role of storytelling in research, including how to synthesize data, harmonize research, and present complex information in meaningful and accessible ways. Her reflections on the relationship between environmental issues and industry offered our interns and team members a deeper understanding of a field that is increasingly relevant across regions and sectors. We are grateful to Penny for sharing her expertise, advice, and inspiring perspective with our team. #NATOAC #NAOC #WaterSecurity #GlobalWaterSecurity #EnvironmentalSecurity #CareerDevelopment #InternshipExperience #Research #Storytelling #Canada
