Long before colonization brought a rigid gender binary to Turtle Island, many Native Peoples recognized and honored a diversity of gender roles and sexual orientations. These people went by many names and were highly respected, serving as healers, medicine people, educators, and storytellers. It wasn't until colonizers forced Indigenous people to culturally assimilate that the colonial gender binary was introduced into these communities. At Native Americans in Philanthropy, we celebrate ALL Indigenous identities, and honor what we have always known: Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ Native community members are an essential part of who we are, and they are necessary for our traditions and Peoples to survive and flourish. If you are interested in learning more about Native American gender identities, sexuality, and the language we use to describe ourselves, the resources below are a good starting point: bit.ly/W2SA-2S bit.ly/NIWRC-2S bit.ly/HRC-2S bit.ly/ICT-2S bit.ly/IHS-2S #Pride #PrideMonth #GenderIdentity #Sexuality #TwoSpirit #LGBTQ #Trans #LGBTQIA2S #Indigenous #Native #WeAreIndigenous #NativeVoices #NativeHeritage #IndigenousHeritage
