In Canada, June is National Indigenous History Month! 🍁 For Canadians, June is a time to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. The roots go back to 1982, when the Assembly of First Nations (then the National Indian Brotherhood) first called for a National Aboriginal Solidarity Day on June 21. After years of advocacy by Indigenous groups, June 21 was officially proclaimed as National Aboriginal Day in 1996. In 2009, the Canadian House of Commons passed a unanimous motion designating the entire month of June as National Aboriginal History Month. In 2017, the name was updated to National Indigenous History Month, using language that more accurately reflects the diversity and self-identification of Indigenous communities across Canada. At Native Americans in Philanthropy, we recognize that the strength, experiences, and sovereignty of Indigenous communities across all of Turtle Island are deeply connected. Our history is a shared history, and a living history.
