🎉 Congratulations to Prof Pierce Chow on co-authoring a new study examining the evolving landscape of surgical treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology! 👏 With HCC recurrence rates approaching 70% at 5 years post-surgery, the review highlights a critical shift needed in patient care. Rather than relying on static staging criteria, the authors advocate for precision treatment strategies. 🔬 Key insights informed by research @ NCCS: Traditional anatomical criteria for surgery are being replaced by frameworks that incorporate tumour markers, immune profiling and functional imaging to better assess risk and optimise outcomes & the concept of "biological resectability" is proving to be a more accurate predictor of surgical success than tumour size or number alone. 🎯 Key message: Best to move beyond one-size-fits-all approaches, and harness precision oncology that integrates tumour genomics, immune phenotypes, and individual biological risk factors to truly personalise clinical decisions for HCC patients.
