How do we design and retrofit buildings and infrastructure that stand the test of time? For Canadians, durability is not just a technical issue. It affects the homes we live in, the public buildings we use, the roads and bridges we rely on, and the cost of maintaining them over time. As Canada faces more extreme weather, rising costs and the need to cut emissions, building longer-lasting, climate-resilient infrastructure matters more than ever. Our researchers study how building materials and systems perform over decades. Their work helps the construction sector make buildings and infrastructure last longer, costs less to maintain and support lower-carbon construction. These challenges will be explored at the 17th International Conference on the Durability of Building Materials and Components (DBMC 2026) taking place July 20 to 24 in Montréal. We are co‑hosting the conference with Concordia University, bringing together researchers, industry experts and partners from around the world to advance durable construction.
