On May 8 Sir David Attenborough celebrates his 100th birthday, but he is receiving an unusual early present—a wasp species named after him. This wasp species has been known for decades, but was only recently designated by Gavin Broad, wasp taxonomist and Principal Curator, Insects, at the Natural History Museum, London. Named Attenboroughnculus tau, Broad wanted to honor the man who introduced him to the concept of "taxonomy" when he was young. As a result, this tiny species, which devours other insects alive, is one of over 50 other species named in Attenborough's honor so far—including an echidna, a fungus, and an extinct marine reptile.
