A simple change to federal research funding could help more federally funded inventions achieve broader impact. In a new article published in Technology and Innovation, the authors propose allowing university researchers to include patenting costs in federal grant budgets. They argue that giving institutions more flexibility and assistance when protecting intellectual property could help advance more federally funded inventions.
