Last year, we said farewell to our orange Zeiss #TEM that was built in the 80ies, internally updated and at Empa since the 2000s, and that will live on at another institution - a true legend! (See 📸 of our TEM responsible Dr. sc. Vera Maria Kissling with her TEM superuser team members Stephanie Eitner and Sebastian Habermann) Then, right before Christmas 2024🎄, we received probably our biggest Christmas present ever: our new JEOL Ltd. JEM2100Plus TEM! 🎁 It came in many giant boxes and had a months-long journey on a container ship on its "shoulders", all the way from Japan around the Cape of Good Hope in Africa to us! 🚢 (See 📸 with our TEM responsible Dr. sc. Vera Maria Kissling and SEM responsible Dr. Alexander Gogos in front of such a box for size reference) It is the first #cryo-#TEM-#STEM at Empa for biological and material samples with elemental analysis (#EDX), bright/dark-field, high-resolution (#HR), diffraction, backscattered electron detection (#BE) and #tomography capabilities. With this new electron microscope, we open a new era of #EM for #research on #biology and #materials! 🔬   Due to its complexity (see all the sensitive parts and wires), and since all good things take their time, this new TEM took our JEOL Ltd. engineers Steffen Klein, Julian Böll, Peter Stadler and Torsten Friedrich months to install! (See 📸 of the installation under the direction of our TEM responsible Dr. sc. Vera Maria Kissling)   Now our TEM core team of TEM responsible Dr. sc. Vera Maria Kissling, her deputy Stephanie Eitner and TEM suprauser and SEM responsible Dr. Alexander Gogos are learning how to drive this new spaceship! 🚀 (See 📸 of the three of them at the TEM with Steffen Klein) Stay tuned for the final look! 📸by Alexander Gogos, Urs Bünter and Dr. sc. Vera Maria Kissling (Empa)
