JUST PUBLISHED on WaterProjectsOnline: Lichfield STW Case study detailing how effective Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) enabled Severn Trent and Mott MacDonald Bentley to identify risks, challenge traditional design assumptions, and develop a more affordable, efficient solution to meet future growth and environmental requirements. Lichfield Sewage Treatment Works serves a population equivalent of approximately 40,200, with forecasts indicating growth to around 56,000 by 2038. To meet new discharge requirements and increased treatment demands, the project team undertook a comprehensive review of the original outline design, identifying opportunities to significantly reduce programme and cost while maintaining compliance with the December 2026 regulatory deadline. The revised solution includes a new combined storm overflow, storm screens, storm tank, two Dortmund-style primary settlement tanks, side-stream Mecana cloth filtration and a new final effluent pumping station and transfer pipeline to the River Trent. The project demonstrates how collaborative working, early site investigations, proactive risk management and innovative optioneering can unlock value, improve delivery certainty and accelerate programme performance.
