COMING SOON: Coundon Burn Pollution Risk Reduction Scheme NWG (Northumbrian Water Group) Water commissioned the Coundon Burn Pollution Risk Reduction Scheme to reduce pollution risk to Coundon Burn and improve the resilience of the local wastewater network. Through innovative design, collaborative value engineering and efficient delivery, the project achieved over £1m in savings, reduced costs by 25% against target, and was completed four months ahead of schedule. Designed and delivered by Esh Group, the scheme combined underground storage, sewer diversions and over 1km of sewer rehabilitation, while minimising environmental impact through trenchless construction techniques and extensive asset reuse. Project participants included: NWG (Northumbrian Water Group) Esh Group Stantec Active Tunnelling Ltd National Trench Safety UK KEN RODNEY CONSTRUCTION LTD FP McCann Ltd Hydro International W. MARLEY AGRICULTURAL CONTRACTORS LIMITED Neville White Construction Project highlights: ✔ Over £1m savings against the original project budget ✔ Delivered 4 months ahead of programme ✔ 25% cost reduction against target ✔ Zero environmental incidents during construction ✔ More than 1km of sewer rehabilitation completed ✔ Whole-life carbon reduced from 310 tCO₂e to 226 tCO₂e 💬 Esh Group "The project demonstrated exceptional performance against programme and budget. Delivered four months ahead of schedule through proactive planning, collaborative working, and effective risk management, the value engineering-led approach generated over £1m in savings compared to the initial £4.5m project cost." 💬 Hydro International / FP McCann Ltd "Storm flows are captured within a new FP McCann Ltd precast concrete storage tank, regulated by a Hydro-Brake® from Hydro International enabling the system to fill and empty naturally, without the need for pumping." 💬 FP McCann Ltd "Storm flows are captured within a new FP McCann Ltd precast concrete storage tank." 💬 Active Tunnelling Ltd "Auger boring was undertaken by Active Tunnelling Ltd to navigate the ancient woodland, the 10m high embankment, and the Grade II listed former railway arch." 💬 KEN RODNEY CONSTRUCTION LTD "Horizontal directional drilling was by KEN RODNEY CONSTRUCTION LTD to eliminate the need for extensive temporary works, reducing the environmental impact by avoiding significant mature trees, mitigating health and safety risks, and reducing the programme duration." 💬 Carbon Reduction "Through a focus on reducing, replacing, and removing carbon, the team achieved a significant reduction in whole-life carbon, from 310 tCO₂e to 226 tCO₂e."
