A reception brought together Linda Porter, wife of composer Cole Porter, and Fulco di Verdura, a 23-year-old Sicilian aristocrat and heir to the Dukedom of Verdura, whose family had become entangled in succession disputes surrounding Villa Niscemi, his childhood home. After a friendship of six years, Linda and Cole Porter introduced Fulco—who had originally aspired to become a painter—to Coco Chanel. Recognising his remarkable artistic sensibility, Chanel first employed the young Duke to design textile patterns before entrusting him with the Maison’s jewellery atelier. Fulco’s creations reflected the nostalgia of his Sicilian childhood, shaped by the books, paintings, and antiquities he had grown up among. Inspired by Coco Chanel’s fascination with Late Antiquity, he drew upon the artistic heritage of Ravenna, reviving echoes of Hellenistic mythology, Byzantine elegance, and early Christian iconography through vibrant combinations of coloured gemstones and enamel, transforming costume jewellery into sophisticated daywear. The collaboration between Coco Chanel and Fulco di Verdura came to an end in 1934, when the Duke relocated to New York, where he would later establish one of the most celebrated jewellery houses of the twentieth century. #CocoChanel #FulcoDiVerdura #LuxuryHistory #JewelryHistory #MythologyOfLuxury
