Reflecting on the conversations at #ScyLight2026 earlier this month, one theme stood out: the growing need for high-capacity, secure and scalable connectivity in space. During the conference in Tenerife, experts from across the optical and quantum communications industry discussed the technologies shaping the future of space connectivity—from secure quantum networks and direct-to-Earth optical links to integrated photonics, optical ground stations and next-generation network architectures. For Mynaric, these discussions reinforced the importance of scalable optical connectivity across all layers and domains of future space networks. As data demands continue to grow, free-space optical communications will play an increasingly critical role in enabling resilient, high-capacity infrastructure in space. Our Principal Systems Engineer, Torsten Bähr, contributed to the discussion by sharing insights into Mynaric's capabilities and the role industrialized optical communications technologies will play in supporting the next generation of space networks. The conference also highlighted the growing importance of interoperability, operational validation and industrial scalability as Europe advances initiatives such as HydRON under ESA's ScyLight programme. Beyond the conference sessions, our team had the opportunity to visit one of Tenerife's optical ground station facilities, offering a firsthand look at the critical ground infrastructure that enables optical communications between space and Earth. Seeing these capabilities in operation underscored the progress being made across the entire optical communications ecosystem.
