My First Big Budget Film: What Dabangg 2 Taught Me About Leading at Scale. In 2012 I walked onto the DABANGG 2 set as an Assistant Art Director. My first long-format project. My first big-budget film. I was terrified and thrilled. Working under Production Designer Shashank Tere, I learned what it means to design at massive scale. Today, as an Art Director leading my own teams, those lessons guide every decision I make. The Challenge: Building Kanpur in Mumbai. We couldn't shoot everything in Kanpur. So we built it—an entire city set at Kamalistan Studios in Mumbai. Streets. Police stations. Markets. Every detail had to feel authentic to UP while being constructed in Maharashtra. Understanding Scale. The film released on 3,500 screens in India and 450 overseas—the highest screen count for any Indian film then. When you're designing for 4,000 screens, every mistake gets magnified. Every detail matters because millions will see it. The Fabulous Team. Director Arbaaz Khan, the powerhouse cast: Salman Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Prakash Raj, Vinod Khanna, Deepak Dobriyal, Kareena Kapoor, Malaika Arora. DOP Aseem Mishra, Production Designer Shashank Tere, Music by Sajid-Wajid & Sandeep Shirodkar, Choreography by Farah Khan. Hemraj Awasthi, Mohan Ballary, Sachin Kesarkar, Arvind Rajpurohit, Naven Kumar Sharma, Prashant Sharma, Prakash Uchil, Shantanu Chaturvedi, Shyamali Dey, Sagar Bhanushali, Manoj Chaturvedi, Shreyas Khedekar, Krishanu Sarbabhowm, Yogiraj Shetty, Hemal Kothari, Krishna Prasad, Katyayan Shivpuri, Vidyut Xavier, Prajakta Ghag, Tejass Korya, Abhijit Khatu. 3 Lessons That Guide Me Today as Art Director: 1. Build Systems Before You Build Sets. Big-budget films need systems, not just skill. Clear communication, documented plans, backup solutions. One missing prop delays a shoot costing lakhs per hour. Now as an Art Director, I build these systems first—before the first sketch is drawn. 2. Deep Research Is Non-Negotiable. Recreating Kanpur meant studying UP's architecture, colors, wear patterns, cultural details. Audiences feel when something's wrong. This research discipline is now my signature on every project I lead. 3. Standards Set Early Stay Forever. Dabangg 2 showed me professional filmmaking's discipline, pace, and detail. That standard never left. Today, leading teams, I teach young assistants the same rigor Shashank Tere taught me. From Assistant to Art Director. That nervous assistant in 2012? Now leading art departments on major productions. Every system I build, every team I manage, every challenge I solve—it traces back to Shashank Tere's mentorship. The experience taught me to think at scale, lead under pressure, and deliver authenticity regardless of constraints. Grateful forever. #FilmCareer #FirstBigProject #CareerGrowth #ProfessionalJourney #FilmProfessional #ArtDirector #ProductionDesigner #FilmCrew #BehindTheScenes #FilmmakingJourney #Dabangg2 #Bollywood #FilmIndustry #CareerLessons #Mentorship #Indian
