We’re delighted to announce the rollout of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel across our Musgrave fleet of almost 500 vehicles. HVO is a completely fossil-free biofuel made of waste and by-products from the food industry; it can be used to power diesel vehicles and provides up to 90% reduction in greenhouse emissions, per litre of fuel used. As a business we will use one million litres of HVO in 2023 across our fleet, and three million litres of HVO by 2025. By 2030, 50% of our entire fleet, delivering to SuperValu, Centra, Musgrave MarketPlace, Foodservice and Daybreak customers, will operate on alternative fuel, making Musgrave one of the largest users of HVO in Ireland. At Musgrave, our fleet of vehicles travel over 35 million kilometres a year, and complete over 20,000 deliveries across the island of Ireland each week. As part of our ongoing efforts to work sustainably, we have reduced our mileage by 15.7 million kilometres per annum by reducing supplier deliveries through backhaul; this allows our vehicles to collect goods from suppliers on their return from customer delivery journeys. We also utilise double deck trailers across the network to increase efficiency. Reducing fleet emissions is central to our Sustainability Strategy, Protecting the Planet and Benefitting Communities; investing in HVO, fleet efficiency and other carbon reduction measures will help the business to realise our ambition of reaching net zero by 2040.
